There is so much said and written about what Astrology is, that instead, I will say a few words about what Astrology is not.
Well, it is definitely not a science supported by evidence proved in a technological laboratory. On the contrary, it is an empiric technique, developed over the centuries based only on observation, by both common people and many wise men. Plenty well known philosophers dedicated themselves to its study and growth since the beginning of time. One of its beauties is that it really works and it is accurate, that has already been established beyond all doubt.
Astrology is based on the ancient Hermetic Law which says: As above so below. This is, very simply put, what our scientists mean today when they say that, in our universe, the microcosm contents are identical to the macrocosm contents…
There are various types or branches in Astrology: Psychological, Medical, Karmic...all offering a lifetime of interesting study.
I am fascinated by, and practice, Psychological Astrology, the one which Freud’s most controversial disciple, Carl Jung, advocated and researched. As a psychologist/psychiatrist, Jung who was also a staunch astrologer, left us an invaluable contribution.
Another point which “is not” and that I would like to demystify is the popular belief and the common idea that planets influence us and/or our life circumstances.
They do not! Planets do not affect us at all!
Astrology observes and studies planets positions and their interactions, thus interpreting what kind of energy is available to us at any given time.
In order to understand how this works think of the following...when you look at a watch, you can see what the time is, but surely you have no doubts whatsoever about the fact that the watch can not influence time. So, you check, for instance, if it is lunch time or supper time. Then using your own free will, you might decide although it is lunchtime not to have lunch…! It is your decision, and the worst that can happen is…well, you might go hungry! Lol.
This is a rough and very simple example as how Astrology works, if we observe the sky (above) we can tell what is happening in the inner realm of individuals (below), but just like the watch pointers, the planets only indicate and reflect what is happening and they have no effect on it.
How does a Natal Chart work?
One can’t mention too often the principle “as above so below”. If we take a picture of the sky at the exact time a person is born, we obtain a map of the inner self of that person. Now, imagine you buy a map of a city to which you have never been before. You can detect the streets, gardens, bridges etc. But the more subtle details, those are known only to those who live there. For instance, from the map you can not tell if there is grass or trees, if there are tall buildings or little houses, etc.
So, an Astrologer can easily identify the major points of interest; such as areas of stress, capabilities, career, relationships etc. but it is advisable to interact with the consulting person in order to achieve best results as opposed to using a computer generated interpretation of the chart, which are very impersonal, general,not so accurate and often contradictory.
The results one pretends are to lead each person to a deeper awareness of its own capabilities and difficulties, thus helping one to take advantage of its gifts, while also learning how to better deal with its own areas of stress.
When you find yourself thinking: Why does this keep happening to me? Oh no, not again…! And why do I always react this same way? You are facing one of your old emotional patterns, which you are probably not aware of, but which is holding you back on your Path and weighing you down. It will keep presenting itself to you until you understand it and are prepared to resolve it. With a Natal Chart one can analyze, identify and bring a level of awareness to these patterns, enable understanding and the possibility of working through them.
Astrology is an invaluable tool for self knowledge, helping and guiding one on its path to evolution, happiness and personal success.
It is worth noting that there are many people born at the same time, yet, we are all different…..that is another fascinating aspect of Astrology.
